Thompson, Puccia Earn Fans' Choice Player of the Year Awards
After a week of voting on Facebook, Albany senior Miles Thompson and New Hampshire junior Laura Puccia were named America East men's & women's lacrosse Fans' Choice Players of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Voting went from April 23-29 on the conference's Facebook page with fans voting by "liking" or "sharing" the photo of each nominated player.
Thompson, a senior attacker at Albany, earned 687 of the 1,540 total votes cast on Facebook on the men's side. Vermont freshman Ian MacKay finished second with 407 votes.
Thompson is one of the top players in the nation, leading the country with 60 goals, an America East single-season record. One of 28 Tewaraaton Award nominees, Thompson also has 30 assists, giving 90 points, the second most in the nation to his teammate and brother, Lyle. He was a three-time America East Player of the Week three times this season.
Puccia, a junior midfielder at New Hampshire, received 778 of the 1,873 votes on Facebook on the women's side. Binghamton's Bri Arthur finished second with 567 votes and Albant's Rachel Bowles with third with 467.
Puccia leads the Wildcats with 39 goals and ranks sixth in the conference with 2.6 goals per game. The junior also ranks second on the team with 45 points and helped UNH earn the No. 4 seed in the America east tournament.
