Nevares Slugs 3 Homers; Earns #AEBASE Player of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two teams clinched playoff spots over the week as Hartford will play in its first America East Championship since 1996 and Stony Brook sealed its ninth-straight trip. Binghamton also won its third-straight conference series with help from the bat of Daniel Nevares who was named Player of the Week. Joining Nevares in the weekly awards is Hartford’s Sean Newcomb (Pitcher of the Week) and Stony Brook’s Casey Baker (Rookie of the Week). Here are the week 12 award winners:

Player of the Week
Daniel Nevares, Sr., 2B, Binghamton
Toa Alta, Puerto Rico

  • Had an outstanding week at the plate, batting .471 (8-for-17) with a 1.294 slugging percentage, three home runs and 12 RBI, helping the Bearcats go 3-1.
  • Led the conference in slugging percentage, home runs and RBI for the week.
  • Flirted with the cycle twice during a three game series with UMass Lowell.
  • Went four-for-five with two home runs and five RBI in a game one win against UMass Lowell.
  • Had a career-high six RBI in a 7-3 win in the rubber game against the River Hawks, including a home run and  a three-run triple.

Pitcher of the Week
Sean Newcomb, Jr., LHP, Hartford
Middleboro, Mass.

  • Threw a complete-game shutout in game one of the series against UMBC.
  • Went all nine innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine.
  • He currently leads the league with a 0.98 ERA and is second with 78 strikeouts in 73.1 innings.

Rookie of the Week
Casey Baker, Fr., DH, Stony Brook
Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

  • Tied for the league lead with a .600 batting average (6-for-10), helping Stony Brook take two of three from Maine.
  • Drove in six runs, tallying at-least one RBI in each game and finishing with a 1.100 slugging percentage.
  • Drove in the lone run in a 2-1 loss in game one with an RBI double.
  • Had a huge game in game two, going three-for-three with three RBI and two runs scored.
  • In the series clinching win on Sunday, he tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and then provided insurance with an RBI triple in the eighth.

Around the League

  • Hartford clinched a spot in the America East Championship for the first time since 1996 with a three-game sweep over UMBC.
  • Stony Brook will make its ninth-straight appearance in the America East Championship after taking two of three from Maine.
  • UMass Lowell has three of the top five batting averages in the America East.
  • Maine ace Tommy Lawrence recorded his third-straight complete game in a 2-1 win over Stony Brook.
  • Maine’s Colin Gay played in his 200th career game over the weekend.
  • Maine has played in 15 one-run games and is 9-6 in those contests.
  • Binghamton has won 9 of its last 11 games and won three-straight conference series.
