STONY BROOK, N.Y. - After a third straight America East Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, Stony Brook assistant tennis coach Jay Friedman was named ITA Northeast Women's Assistant Coach of the Year Tuesday.
Friedman is in line for National Assistant Coach of the Year, which will be voted on this week in Athens, Ga.
"Jay is an extremely deserving recipient of this award," head coach Gary Glassman said. "He is also the first assistant coach in the history of the Stony Brook tennis program to earn this award. His impact over the last four years is difficult to put into words. However, the results speak for themselves - on and off the court."
In addition to helping Stony Brook capture three straight conference titles on the women's side, Friedman was instrumental in guiding the men's team to a berth in the championship game this season.
Last season, Nini Lagvilava '13 became the first women's player in school history to reach the NCAA Singles Championship.
