EUGENE, Ore. - Albany, the America East softball champion, begins NCAA regional play on Friday out in Eugene, Ore. at the University of Orego. The Great Danes (33-11) received the No. 3 seed in the region and will face No. 2 Wisconsin in their first game at 5 p.m. EDT.
The Great Danes are the second America East program in the last three years to receive a No. 3 seed in a regional. Boston University also did so in 2012.
Albany is one of two America East teams to reach a regional final since 2007. The Great Danes accomplished the feat that year, eliminating Harvard and Hofstra before falling to Baylor. Overall America East teams have combined for 10 NCAA wins, six coming since 2007.
The regional round, which takes place from May 16-18, features a double-elimination tournament which will produce 16 teams for the Super Regionals. Top overall seed (49-7-1) and Utah Valley University (18-40) filled the final two slots in the pool.
The Great Danes, winners of 13 of their last 14 games, won the America East Championship in dramatic fashion last week. The Great Danes closed out the tournament with three straight wins including two against Stony Brook Sunday for the league crown.
