America East Cross Country Season Set to Start

The 2014 cross country season kicks off for a pair of America East programs this weekend while the majority of teams begin their seasons next weekend.

UMBC will look to be the first repeat America East champion on the men's side  since New Hampshire won three consecutive championships from 2006 to 2008. On the women's side, reigning league champion New Hampshire looks to defend its cross after capturing its first title since 2003 last season, ending Stony Brook’s six-year run as champion. 

The 2014 America East Cross Country Championship will take place Saturday, November 1 in Orono, Maine.

Men’s Cross Country

Albany Great Danes

  • The Great Danes placed sixth at the America East Championship in 2013.
  • Key returners for Albany include senior Chris Buchanan, who placed 16th at the America East Championship, and junior James Sommer, who also placed in the top 20.
  • Albany’s first meet is in Vestal, N.Y. at the Binghamton Invitational on September 5. 

Binghamton Bearcats

  • Binghamton finished second at the 2013 America East Championships, and the men were ranked 10th in the final USTFCCCA North East Region Poll.
  • Top returners for the Bearcats are junior Ethan Hausamann and senior Matt Johnson.  Hausamann placed 17th overall at the 2013 America East Championships.  Johnson placed 21st at the conference champion and was the team’s MVP his sophomore year in 2012.
  • Binghamton cross country opens 2014 with a home meet against the Albany Great Danes on September 5. 

Hartford Hawks

  • Hartford placed ninth at the 2013 America East Cross Country championship.
  • Hartford is bringing in five freshman this year, and the roster is led by seniors Jonathan Choiniere and Matthew Stoutz
  • The Hawks will begin their season in Smithfield, R.I., at the Bryant University Nassaney Invitational on September 6.

Maine Black Bears

  • Maine as a team finished fifth in Orono at the conference championships
  • The Black Bears had two top five performers in last years America East Championship; Kelton Cullenberg finished second and Alexander Moser finished fourth.

UMBC Retrievers

  • The Retrievers won the 2013 America East Cross Country Championship finishing with 58 points.
  • UMBC key returners include juniors Hassan Omar, who finished third in the 2013 America East Championship, Austin Hayslett, and America East’s Men’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete, Eric Schuler.
  • UMBC is ranked 11th in the preseason USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region poll.
  • The Retrievers start their season on August 29 at Mount St. Mary’s. 

UMass Lowell River Hawks

  • The River Hawks placed eighth in their first America East Cross Country Championship last year.
  • Omar Addi was the top performer for the River Hawks in last year’s championship, placing 45th.
  • UMass Lowell begins their season at the Keene State Alumni Meet in Keene, N.H. on August 30.

 New Hampshire Wildcats

  • The New Hampshire Wildcats placed fourth in the 2013 America East Championship, finishing just two points behind Stony Brook.
  • John Prizzi is back after winning America East men’s individual title last year with a time of  24:55.2.  Prizzi would place 49th at the NCAA Regional Meet.
  • New Hampshire is ranked 11th in the preseason USTFCCCA Northeast Region Poll.
  • The Wildcats begin their season with their only home meet of the year against Providence College on August 30th.

Stony Brook Seawolves

  • Led by Eric Speakman and Tyler Frigge, the Stony Brook Seawolves placed third in the 2013 America East Championship.
  • Along with Speakman and Frigge, Stony Brook has three other seniors ready to lead this year’s squad: Matt Granata, Matt Zampariello, and Chris Sauer.
  • The Seawolves placed 14th on the USTFCCCA Northeast Region preseason poll.
  • Stony Brook opens the season hosting the Stony Brook Season Opener on August 30th.

Vermont Catamounts

  • Vermont placed seventh in the America East championships last year.
  • Aaron Sztoka was the top performer, finishing 20th overall.
  • The Catamounts season starts at the Pre-Conference meet in Orono, Maine on September 6.

Women’s Cross Country

Albany Great Danes

  • The Great Danes are coming off of a season where they placed fourth in the America East Championship.
  • Albany runners Brittney Lane, who has since graduated, and Silvia Del Fava finish second and third, respectfully, in the America East Championship.
  • Albany is incredibly young as a squad, only having five upperclassmen.
  • The Great Danes have landed themselves in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region preseason poll as the 12th ranked team.
  • The start of the season for the Great Danes begins on September 5th in Vestal, N.Y., at the Binghamton Invitational.

Binghamton Bearcats

  • The Bearcats finished ninth at the America East Championship in 2013.
  • Binghamton returns it’s most dangerous runner in junior Alexis Hatcher, who placed 23rd in the conference championship.
  • Binghamton hasn’t finished in the top four of the conference since 2004.
  • The Bearcats begin their season at home with a meet against Albany on September 5th.

Hartford Hawks

  • At the America East Championship, Meghan Barry was the lone Hawks to finish the race at Orono in the top 10.
  • Hartford placed sixth at the 2013 championship.
  • The sixth-place finish was the Hawks’ best in program history.
  • The Hawks season takes off on September 6 in Rhode Island at the Bryant University Nassaney Invitational.

Maine Black Bears

  • Black Bears finished eighth at the 2013 conference championship.
  • The top returners for Maine include seniors Rachel Wilkinson and Carolyn Stocker.
  • Maine’s first meet will be the Pre-Conference Meet on September 6th.

 UMBC Retrievers

  • UMBC finished in the middle of the pack at the America East Championship, placing fifth, their best finish as a program.
  • The Retrievers start their season at Mount St. Mary’s 5K Duals on August 29th.

UMass Lowell River Hawks

  • In their first season with the America East, the River Hawks placed seventh in the conference championship.
  • UMass Lowell is led this year by returning sophomore Jaclyn Solimine, who placed 29th in the America East Championship
  • The River Hawks welcoming 8 new freshman to the cross country roster
  • Lowell heads to Keene, N.H. for their first meet of 2014; the Keen State Alumni Meet on August 30. 

New Hampshire Wildcats

  • After winning the America East Championship meet last year, the Wildcats rank 7th in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Preseason Poll entering 2014.
  • New Hampshire had three runners place in the top 10 of the championship meet, led by Elinor Purrier who ran a 17:55.62.
  • Purrier also raced the 3000m steeplechase at the IAAF World Junior Championships earlier this summer and finished ninth with a time of 10:21.59.
  • The Wildcats begin this season at Providence College in Durham, N.H., on August 30th.

Stony Brook Seawolves

  • The Seawolves come into this season looking to regain the title of America East Cross Country Champion after placing second last year, which ended their six-year title run.
  • Stony Brook will be looking to hide the vacancy of three-time all conference selection, and 2013 individual champion Olivia Burne, who graduated. 
  • In the USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Preseason Poll, the Seawolves are ranked 10th.
  • Stony Brook starts their season on August 30th at home, with the Stony Brook Season Opener.

Vermont Catamounts

  • The Catamounts placed third at the America East Conference Championship last year, making it three-straight years they have finished in the top half of the conference.
  • Alicia Clark is a key returner for Vermont.  The junior finished 14th at the conference championship last year.
  • Vermont begins their season on September 6 with the Pre-Conference Meet in Orono, Maine.
