Purrier, Melian to Run in NCAA XC Championship Saturday
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The last two America East cross country women's individual champions will compete for a national title and All-America status Saturday. New Hampshire's Elinor Purrier and Stony Brook's Christina Melian will race in the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship for the second-straight year.
The 6K race begins at 11 a.m. and will be streamed on NCAA.com.
Purrier, who is seeded sixth for the race, captured the 2016 America East individual women's title setting a course record in the process. She was the NCAA Northeast regional meet on Nov. 11 and was fifth in the pre-national meet in Indiana earlier this season. She earned All-America status in indoor and outdoor track & field last year.
Melian is back in the NCAAs for the second-straight season. The 2015 America East champion took second this year. She placed ninth at the Northeast Regional meet and took the fourth and final qualifying spot.
Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
Last year, a pair of America East runners, Hassan Omar and Laura Rose Donegan, earned All-America status.
