Menís Swimming & Diving to Return as Championship Sport; VMI Joins as Associate Member
BOSTON – The America East Conference announced today the return of men’s swimming & diving as a championship sport and that Virginia Military Institute (VMI) will join America East an associate member in men’s and women’s swimming & diving. Both changes are effective for the 2017-18 academic year.
“We are excited to bring back men’s swimming & diving as a championship sport and welcome VMI as an associate member for both men’s and women’s swimming & diving,” said America East Commissioner, Amy Huchthausen. “As a conference, we pride ourselves on our broad-based athletic mission and are pleased more student-athletes will be able to compete for America East championships in the future.”
Binghamton University, University of Maine and UMBC are America East’s three schools that currently sponsor men’s swimming & diving and will comprise, along with VMI, a four-team America East Championship starting in 2018. Binghamton and Maine spent the last four years as independent programs while UMBC was a member of the CCSA, as was VMI. America East previously sponsored men’s swimming & diving from 1990-2013.
VMI will join Binghamton, Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont to form a seven-team women’s swimming & diving championship starting in 2018.
“VMI is grateful for the opportunity to join America East in men’s and women’s swimming & diving,” said VMI athletic director, Dave Diles.” The conference is widely recognized for the high educational achievement of its student-athletes, sportsmanship and competitive excellence. Joining America East provides our programs with an exceptional competitive platform and underscores our commitment to advancing all of the intercollegiate programs at VMI.”
The 2017 America East Swimming & Diving Championship will be held at WPI in Worcester, Mass. on Feb. 9-12. Dates and venue for the 2018 championship will be announced on a future date.
