2 #AEWLAX Teams Earn NCAA Bids
For the second time in three years, two America East women's lacrosse teams have earned bids to the NCAA Tournament as the bracket was unveiled Sunday night on NCAA.com. The NCAA announced the 26-team field that features 13 conference champions and 13 at-large bids.
America East champion Stony Brook earned the No. 8 seed and will host the NCAA first and second rounds. The Seawolves will host Bryant on Friday, May 12 at 5 PM on AmericaEast.TV at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Albany earned the third at-large berth in America East history and second in the last three years. The Great Danes will face Northwestern on Friday, May 12 at 7:30 PM at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. If both Stony Brook and Albany win, they would face-off in the second round of the tournament on Sunday.
Eight sites will host first and second-round competition on May 8 and 10, and four quarterfinal games will be played May 16 or 17. These preliminary-round games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals and final May 26 and 28 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Stony Brook (18-1) won its fifth-straight America East title to earn the conference's automatic bid, beating Albany, 14-12, on Sunday afternoon. The team has won NCAA games three times in the last four seasons, defeating Towson in both 2013 and 2014 and beating Boston College last year in the first round.
Albany (14-5) is the third at-large selection from the America East, earning a bid for the second time in the last three seasons. The Great Danes are a top-five offense in the country entering the tournament and their five losses have all come against top-20 teams this season. Albany is making its fourth NCAA appearance. The Great Danes beat Dartmouth in the NCAA first round in 2011.
