Pair of Bearcats and a Black Bear Earn Weekly Awards

Cambridge, Mass.-- A pair of all-conference performers in Binghamton University junior Dave Ciocchi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and University of Maine hurler Keith Bilodeau (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) earned this week's America East Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Ciocchi's infield teammate John Howell (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse), a shortstop, took home Rookie of the Week honors.

Ciocchi, a junior first baseman, finished a three-game series at Liberty batting .600 with four runs, six hits, 1.100 slugging and an on-base percentage of .667. He hit two doubles and one home run while driving in five runs as well. In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Ciocchi went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and vie RBI. In the field, he didn't make an error in 21 chances at first base. The junior is batting .560, slugging .920 and reaching base at a .607 clip, all league bests.

Bilodeau went 1-0 in two starts last week with a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings. He struck out 18 while allowing 13 hits and three earned runs. The junior picked up Maine's first win of the season by throwing eight shutout innings at Stetson. He allowed just four hits while striking out 10. Later in the week, he got a no decision in Maine's game at Rollins. Bilodeau went seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and struck out eight. Though not getting the victory, he put the Black Bears in a position to eventually win in the bottom of the ninth.

Bearcat freshman Howell batted .500 in the three-games at set Liberty and recorded a .545 on-base percentage. He collected five hits in 10 at-bats, scored two runs and drove in two teammates. In the third game, Howell went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while hitting out of the eight spot.

Team Notebooks:

Albany (1-7, 0-0 AE) won its first game of the season in the finale of a three-game series at UNC Greensboro... After falling 6-5 in game one on Friday, the Great Danes dropped the first half of a doubleheader on Saturday, before posting an 8-6 win over the Spartans in the nightcap... Pete DiResta led Albany in the win, going 3-for-5 with two doubles... In the opener, right-hander Dave Kubiak took the loss on the mound, but did not allow an earned run in five innings of work... In Saturday's first game, Josh Nethaway went 3-for-5 with one run scored and three RBI, including a two-run homer in the top of the third that gave Albany a 5-1 lead... Three other Great Danes also finished with multiple hits, including DiResta, who recorded a triple in the first inning and an RBI single in the eighth... Albany will return to action next weekend with a four-game series at New York Tech.

Binghamton (2-5, 0-0) won one of three games in a rain-shortened series at Liberty. The Bearcats scored 20 runs and hit .330 in the three games but the pitching staff was tagged for a 9.43 ERA... Junior first baseman Dave Ciocchi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) hit a team-high .600 in the series. Ciocchi collected five RBI and had a slugging percentage of 1.100... Junior pitcher Mike Augliera (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) notched his second win in as many starts. In two outings, he has struck out 10 and walked none... Freshman shortstop John Howell (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit .500... Sophomore third baseman Jordon Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) drilled a grand slam in the seventh inning to preserve BU's 12-7 win in game two of the series. Smucker drove in a career-high six in that game.

Hartford (0-4, 0-0) opened its season over the weekend with a four-game series at Oregon State... The Hawks fell in all four games to the 2006 and 2007 national champions... Junior Simon Kudernatsch (Prague, Czech Republic/Prague West) drove in four runs on the weekend, tops on the team... He had three hits, as did senior Rodger Wilmot (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) to pace the Hawks... Senior Matt Walker (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) slammed the Hawks' only home run of the weekend as part of their 16-1 loss on Saturday... One bright spot was the relief performance of freshman Alex Gouin (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), who went four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader... Senior Vincent Fiore (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht/Monroe College) also had a solid relief outing, giving up just one run in three innings.

The University of Maine baseball team (3-8, 0-0 AE) went 3-4 on the week... Maine got an outstanding pitching performance from Keith Bilodeau (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) who went eight shutout innings allowing just four hits while striking out 10... His 10 strikeouts in the game were a career high... Bilodeau leads Maine with 22 strikeouts on the season... Maine hit five home runs on the week... Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) had a pair while rookie Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) also had a pair.... Lewis has five of Maine's 10 stolen bases on the season... Sophomore infielder Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) returned to the Maine lineup last week... Fransoso had off-season surgery and was expected to miss a majority of the season... Fransoso drove in the game-winning run in Maine's 5-4 walk-off win over Rollins on Sunday afternoon with a double in the bottom of the ninth inning... Maine will face Penn on Monday, before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. for a pair of games against highly-ranked Florida State... The game on Tuesday will be televised regionally by Fox Sports Florida.

The UMBC baseball team (0-4, 0-0 AE) opened its 2011 campaign last week with four games, but fell to Delaware Tuesday, Navy Friday and a doubleheader to Lafayette Saturday... Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) leads the hitters with a .417 average, while freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) is second with a .375 average and leads the Retrievers with five runs scored and six hits... Four of junior Bryan Klukowicz's (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) five hits are doubles... Junior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) has made three relief appearances, allowing no runs in three and a third innings pitched... The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they play at George Washington at 2:30 p.m., before hosting Fairfield in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.

The Seawolves (2-4, 0-0AE) were swept in a three-game series by No. 17 North Carolina over the weekend... Sophomore William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) hit .462 (6-for-13) with four RBI in the three-game set... Stony Brook rallied from a five-run deficit in the final game of the series, taking a 6-5 lead on a two-run home run from Carmona in the seventh, but UNC scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away... Freshman Brandon McNitt (Chino Hills, Calif.) allowed just two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings of relief in the finale... McNitt has allowed just two runs on six hits in 9.1 innings of relief this season... The Tar Heels won the series opener, 5-1... Stony Brook out-hit North Carolina, 12-7... Junior Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing five hits in 5.2 innings... Tropeano gave up five runs but only three are earned... The Tar Heels won the opener of the Saturday doubleheader, 18-4... The Seawolves open their home schedule against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday... Stony Brook will travel to participate in the Bo Jangles Classic this weekend, hosted by Winthrop... The Seawolves will take on host Winthrop as well as Michigan.
