This Week in America East Baseball Week 9

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With two weekends remaining before the 2013 America East Baseball Championship at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass., only one team, Maine, has clinched a playoff spot. The Black Bears have a chance to capture their first regular-season title since 2002 this weekend, with a magic number of four over Albany, three over Binghamton and one over both Stony Brook and Hartford (magic number is number of combined Maine wins and opponent losses).

Here is a look at the weekend series:

Maine (29-18, 16-7) at Binghamton (24-19, 13-10)

Maine can clinch the America East regular-season title, its first since 2002, by taking two of three this weekend at Binghamton and two losses from Albany at Stony Brook. It would be only the third regular-season title in Black Bear history. Game one starting pitcher Tommy Lawrence has already set the America East record for wins in conference play with a perfect 8-0 mark.

Binghamton is coming off a big sweep of Hartford last weekend and sits in third place in the conference standings, only a half-game behind second-place Albany. Jake Thomas leads the conference, batting .391 in conference play, while starter Jay Lynch is 4-3 with a 1.76 ERA in eight America East starts.

Hartford is tied with Stony Brook for the final spot in the America East Championship entering the weekend, and the two teams will play each other in the final series of the season next week. The Hawks were swept last week against Binghamton and have lost three of their last four America East series. Hartford is the lone team in the conference to take a series from Maine this season.

Albany is 2.5 games out of first place after dropping two of three against Maine last weekend. The Great Dances can clinch a spot in the America East Championship by winning two of three against Stony Brook. Outfielder Josh Nethaway, a two-time America East Player of the Week selection, is hitting .363 in league play with 17 RBI and 10 doubles.

Stony Brook is tied for Hartford for the final playoff spot and will face the Hawks on the final weekend of play next week. Kevin Courtney leads the Seawolves in America East play with a .363 average and has driven in a conference-best 26 runs. Freshmen Daniel Zamora and Tim Knesnik have been big boosts to the pitching staff, capturing the last two Rookie of the Week honors.
