Albany Draws UConn in NCAA 1st Round
After winning their sixth-straight America East women's basketball title, the University at Albany Great Danes drew a No. 16 seed and will face No. 1 seed UConn in the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday at 11 AM on ESPN in Storrs, Conn. The 64-team field was unveiled during ESPN's Selection Show Special on Monday night.
The Great Danes, who are making their sixth-straight NCAA appearance to tie a conference record, earned their highest seed in program history and will play a first round game on against a home team for the third time in six years.
Albany (21-11) won its first-ever NCAA tournament game last season, upsetting Florida in the first round before falling to Syracuse in the second round. America East teams are 5-27 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
UConn (32-0) has won 107-straight games and the last four national titles. The Huskies are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament and have won 11 total national titles, the most of any team in the country.
First- and second-round games will be played at 16 home sites Friday, March 17 through
Monday, March 20, with the 16 second-round winners moving on to the four regional sites. The
Lexington Regional (Rupp Arena, Lexington, Kentucky) and the Oklahoma City Regional
(Chesapeake Energy Arena, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) will be played Friday, March 24 and
Sunday, March 26, while the Bridgeport Regional (Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport, Connecticut)
and the Stockton Regional (Stockton Arena, Stockton, California) will be held Saturday, March 25
and Monday, March 27. The four regional winners will advance to the 2017 NCAA Women’s Final
Four, March 31 and April 2 in Dallas (American Airlines Center).
