America East teams have had great success in the men's soccer tournament over the last decade with at least one team advancing to the second round in eight of the last 10 seasons. Overall, America East teams are 14-24-5 all-time in NCAA tournament play.
(10-6-3), which is 9-3-1 over its last 13 games, captured its second
America East title in three years with a 4-2 win over Hartford Sunday.
The Seawolves, who average a conference best 1.63 goals per game, match a
championship record by scoring seven goals in their two tournament
The Seawolves are led by America East Midfielder of the Year Leonardo Fernandes, who also earned the championship's Most Outstanding Player award after tying the tournament record for points with eight on three goals and two assists. He also set a single-game tournament mark for points with five (2G, 1A) against the Hawks.
Stony Brook is making its third NCAA appearance since 2005 after it beat Hartford, 4-2, in the America East title game on Saturday. The Seawolves are 1-2 all-time in tournament play, beating Yale in 2005 before falling to UConn and getting edged by Brown in double-overtime in 2009. America East teams are 2-0 in previous NCAA meetings against Northeast Conference teams. Boston U. defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in 2008 while the Binghamton downed the Knights in 2003.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Stony Brook and Monmouth (14-5-1), the NEC champion. The winner will play at No. 3 Connecticut Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1
