As part of the interactive series, Campus Connection, America East continues to travel across the conference featuring a team from each of our nine institutions. As part of the show, we also have the chance to learn some of the basics of the sports from our student-athletes.

In this edition we headed up to Catamount Country to catch up with the Vermont women’s lacrosse team who enters this weekend fighting for the program’s first berth in to the America East Championship since 2009. We caught up with head coach Jen Johnson and two seniors who talked about the season and what it’s been like playing in the new facility, Virtue Field.

It’s been a year of milestones for the team this season. Seniors Allison Pfohl, Samantha Stern and sophomore Sydney Mas each reached their hundredth career points mark. For the seniors, they feel it was something special to experience with their teammates and a great capstone to their collegiate careers. Stern who took on a new role this season stepped into the midfield position and currently leads the Catamounts in assists.

Jen Johnson is in her eighth year as head coach of the women’s lacrosse team. She has helped create a top tier program in the America East Conference. Coach Johnson has implemented the philosophy of “fun and focused.” She wants the team to enjoy being at practice, playing the sport they all love while maintaining the drive and dedication it takes to build a winning program.

Aside from personal and team success, it has been an especially exciting this year to play on their brand new synthetic turf field facility. Virtue Field serves as the home field for both the soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as recreational sports. It is the first phase of a planned stadium project that will include grandstand seating for 3,000 spectators, game-day locker rooms, public restrooms, concessions, and storage space.  With this new facility the lacrosse program should only continue to grow and improve.

Be sure to check out this feature and watch America East put our lacrosse skills to the test on Virtue Field.

The 2012 America East Women’s Lacrosse Championship starts on Thursday, May 3rd at Nickerson Field located at Boston University.
